Coastal Bend College listened to the needs of the Oil and Gas Industry and with a grant with the Higher Education Coordinating Board, created a mobile, one-of-a-kind learning environment for the oilfield industry. With the Coastal Bend College Process Technology Mobile Unit, CBC can offer the industry 'customized training'. In addition to industry training, the turnkey trailer provides students with college credit from a marketable skills achievement award to an Associates of Applied Science degree in Oil and Gas Technology, including a portable programmable logic control simulator, hydraulics and pneumatics simulator, process control learning center, mechanical training centers and an industrial wiring training center. All equipment will be mobile, adding more versatility to class instruction. The mobile training center has the ability to service 8-10 students.

The mobile lab, presently being utilized at the Beeville campus, will service all four Coastal Bend Colleges that includes Pleasanton, Alice and Kingsville. The mobile training lab will debut at Pleasanton High School on February 19 for an elective fair and again will be in Pleasanton at the CBC College Fair on March 4 which is open to area high schools. The mobile training lab will also be available during the fall courses in Pleasanton.

In addition to college courses, the Training Lab can be utilized by businesses for training employees. Employers can contact the college, and classes can be developed on a case by case basis, depending on the needs of the employer. This training can be paid for through state funding, at no cost to industry partners.

Jenny Moore is the General Industry Coordinator at Coastal Bend College. She said, "Some of the things we've done in the past, we're reorganizing and doing a little differently. We are currently offering safety classes such as oilfield specific PEC Safety (Petroleum Education Council includes Safeland/ Safe Gulf)), OSHA 10, OSHA30, HAZWOPER and First Aid/CPR. In addition to these industry specific classes, many people in the industry are seeing a need to be more computer literate, so we are offering computer classes, right now, including everything from Intro to Computers to Intermediate Excel and Powerpoint.

"With the new oil and gas program at Coastal Bend College here in Pleasanton, we needed an experienced instructor. We found David Turnipseed with a background with over 35 years experience in the oilfield. Mr. Turnipseed holds a Chemistry and Mathematics degree from Texas A&M Kingsville, has worked for established companies, such as Baker Atlas (now Baker Hughes), Halliburton and Schlumberger in different capacities."

"In the fall, courses will be available for high school students, as well as, for the public. Students interested in the Oil and Gas Technology Program should enroll in PTRT 1301, which is your basic introduction into petroleum, and PTRT 1313 which is industrial safety. We are planning to offer OSHA training and PEC during the industrial safety class time period so that students will be better equipped to start in the oilfield. If a student has those basics, along with a CDL, they will have a marketable advantage over other job prospects."

Coastal Bend College had a truck driving course in the past and is looking at revamping that program. They're deciding whether to do it internally as our own program or contract it out with a third party.

Moore said, "We'll be doing a safety week program in June in conjunction with National Safety Month. The whole week will be about safety training, offering PEC, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, HazWoper and First Aid Continuing education classes like these can be offered at any time at Coastal Bend College if we know the need is there."

Katie Sherman, MBA, Director of Customized & Continuing Education at Coastal Bend said, "There are opportunities to provide free training to the oil industry through state grants. The state is looking at opportunities to invest the tax revenue received from the oil and gas industry. They will pay for training when a company partners with a community college. The state has several options to fund customized training that the oil industry partners need, whether it's computer, mechanical or electrical. The process technology trailer can be used to provide training to fit exactly what the industry needs. It can provide anywhere from a few days of training to several weeks at a time and all of that training can be paid for through a grant and there's no cost to the business."

"What we're striving for at the community college level is to meet the present needs of the industry. We're trying to get out of the traditional college mentality of 'this is what we offer, and that's all we've got.' The State says you need to partner with the industry…figure out and analyze what kind of training is needed for entry level or incumbent employees. Colleges need to customize the training and start developing programs that meet the needs of the industry. Without that partnership and discussion we don't really know what the industry needs. We need to have that conversation and begin to develop training that and meets the current needs of the workforce."

Jenny Moore moved to Pleasanton 5 years ago with her husband, Dusty, who has over 20 years in the oilfield service industry. She's been associated with Coastal Bend College for two short months. She is the General Industry Coordinator and services all four campuses. Prior to this, she was at Alamo Colleges in San Antonio for four years. In addition she was previously employed by AutoGas which developed the pay-at-thepump technology and Zachry Associates, a fullservice advertising agency. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Marketing from Texas Tech University.

Katie Sherman, Director of Customized & Continuing Education at Coastal Bend, also covering all four locations, has been at Coastal Bend College for 2 ½ years, starting as an advisor. Her background includes working at an emergency services consulting firm for 5 years and in the legal field for close to five as well. She received an MBA from Marylhurst University in Oregon.
